OK, I know I'm behind the times and technology and stuff so this is probably a stupid question, but what's the big deal with gmail? All I know is it's a Google powered email service, right? What makes it so much better than, say Yahoo! mail, and why do you need an invite?

hehe.. not a stupid question at all.

One of the appeals is that it provides you with over 2 gigs of space. When this was first announced (and they were only offering 1 gig), other companies were only giving away 10 Megs but are quickly catching up.
Another reason why I like it is their “conversational” view. I love how your email and its correspondent are listed under one tab. So you no longer have to search for what you said in your older emails.

Then there is the photo feature that allows you to send up to 10mb of photo and it works with Picasa

Last but not least, free POP access…

I feel like I am a salesperson for Google

Sorry, did not answer all of your question. The Gmail feature is still in BETA and to get into the beta, is by invite only. But it's a joke really, cause each person that signs up for gmail gets 50 invites.

When Gmail first entered beta. People were auctioning invites on eBay. go figure
